E-mail Print PDF

In 1981, Ishrat Jahan Kobita was born in a middle class family at Jhenaidah. She married to Md. Ekramul Hoque, who was a worker. Ekramul Hoque was the only earning person of the family and worked in a garment in Dhaka. Gradually the family of Ishrat Jahan has grown to four including two children. Suddenly she heard a bad news that her husband was no more in this world.  Md. Ekramul died after falling into the lift hole when he was rushing into the lift as the door of the lift opened at 7th floor but the lift box did not reach at that floor. After that, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead on September 22, 2013.  The unexpected death of her husband destroyed her all the dreams. Primarily, the employer paid BDT 50,000/- and denied giving rest of the   compensation. After getting our assistance Ishrat Jahan Kobita got rest of the amount of compensation BDT 50,000/-

On the way to rebuild Kobita’s dream

Selecting through newspaper monitoring, the investigation team investigated the case and submitted their report. After getting such report legal team tried to contact with the member of the deceased family over phone. Fortunately, deceased family responded and agreed to seek our assistance in realising rest of the amount Tk.50,000/- , being informed about their legal right regarding this matter. Then, SRS wrote a letter to the employer on 12 December 2013. In response, the employer contacted us and shared that they would like to pay compensation.  On 30 January 2014, they came in our office and paid rest of the amount. Mediation

Courageous Kobita

Ishrat Jahan Kobita came in our office with her uncle. She said that, “I did not want to receive money like this but it’s my responsibility to take care of my children and for that I need money.” “Whatever I have lost is no more recoverable but the money I have got is a lot for us to lead a bit better life in the future”- she added. “I think, I can do what will be the best for my children by this.” She expressed a hope that she will utilize some money for the education of their children and some for continuing a grocery shop for regular income.

Dream but true

Although, Ishrat Jahan Kobita lost the only earning member of her family, she received a significant settlement with employer, which helped her to see the new dream with her children. She is residing in the rural area of Jhenaidah. She said, I am poor and almost illiterate and I do not have any idea about our legal rights. When SRS informed me that I was entitled to get compensation from the employer according to BLA, 2006 I felt scared and at the same time, I was expecting if I would get rest of compensation. Safety and Rights Society always contacted me and I am sure that without Safety and Rights Society it would not possible for me to get the rest of the money. As a member of deceased family, initially after getting tk 50,000/- I put my signature on the settlement paper but ultimately the total achievement goes to Safety & Rights Society. She now feels that her children can grow up with some hope in the society
