The number of deaths ham workplace accidents across the country marked a rise last year as at least 538 workers were killed during the time.
Some 432 workers died in 373 work• place accidents in 2020. according to a study
Safety and Rights Society (SRS), a nom government organisation. has revealed the findings on Friday while exchanging views with journalists at its office in Mohammadpur in the capital.
Of the victims. 150 died in transport sector. 138 in construction sector, and 112 in manufacturing sector (garment factory. plastic factory ship breaking. steel re rolling mill, etc). according to the study Beskies. some 86 workers died in serve ice sectors (hotels, workshops, power sup. ply organizations) and 52 workers in agri. culture sector.
Road accident was major reason for death. At least 156 workers were killed In road accidents. Electrocution killed 82 workers while 72 were killed in fire incl. dents.
Some 58 workers died after falling from buildings and 49 died in lightning strikes.
Some 32 workers died being crushed under machinery or hard objects while 30 workers died ftom inhaling noxious gas of septic tanks.
Collapse from building. wall or roof took lives of 27 workers. Some 23 workers died in explosions while nine workers died after drowning in water.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director of SRS Sekendar Ali Mina said, “The outgoing year was not a blessing for the workers as many of them lost their join amid COVID•19 pandemic and many fell victims to workplace accidents.” He also saki, “In 2020. many workers could not work for about One months due to COVID•19 pandemic. But when they returned to the work finally. they met dreadlId incidents including the fire incl. dent at the Shezan juice factory in Ruban. where 52 workers were burnt to death and five workers were killed in a Ore at Romana Rubber Factory in Soarighat.” SRS prepared the report by monitoring 26 daily newspapers its national and 11 local newspapers) ftom January 1 to December 31, 2021.
