712 workers died across the country in the last one year (January to December) due to 547 workplace accidents.
According to the organization’s survey, 538 workers were killed in 399 workplace accidents across the country during the same period in 2021.
The non-governmental organization Safety and Rights Society (SRS) informed this information in a press release on Saturday (December 31) afternoon.
Earlier, in a media dialogue organized at Mohammadpur office of the organization, the executive director of the organization Sekander Ali Meena revealed the information of this survey.
He said that they conducted this survey based on the news of 15 national dailies and 11 local newspapers.
An analysis of workplace deaths in the survey found that the highest number of workers were killed in the transport sector. The total number of which is 333 people. After that there are total 170 people in service establishments (such as workshops, gas-electricity supply), 104 people in construction sector, 62 people in agriculture sector and 43 people in factories and productive establishments.
By reviewing the causes of death, it can be seen that 353 people were killed by road accidents, 84 people were killed by explosions, 69 people were electrocuted, 57 people were struck by lightning, 45 people fell from a height, 38 people were hit by heavy objects or crushed under them, 24 people drowned in water, burned by fire. 14, 14 people died due to poisoning and 13 people died due to collapse.
Secender Ali Meena said that safety measures must be ensured in every sector to control accidents at work. Negligence of the employers regarding the safety of the workers at the workplace and lack of inspection by the government departments are one of the reasons for the accidents.
