Three construction workers died as scaffolding outside a 12-storey under-construction building broke in the city’s Dhanmondi area yesterday.
The dead are Monirul Islam, 40, of Chapainawabganj, and Mokhlesur Rahman, 22, and Saidur Rahman, 35, of Kurigram.Monirul was a mason and the two others were his assistants, said co-workers.
According to witnesses, the victims were plastering an outside wall of the 12th floor of the building on Road-5 in Dhanmondi. They were standing on scaffolding made of metal pipes and bamboos.
As the scaffolding broke around 4:30pm, the three fell on the roof of a ground-floor parking space, added witnesses.
The co-workers rushed the three to nearby Central Hospital where doctors declared Saidur dead.
Monirul and Mokhlesur were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where physicians pronounced them dead.
Co-worker Nur Islam told The Daily Star that the victims had been working there since morning. Nur and eight other workers were cleaning the roof of the parking space when the accident occured.
Hailing from Kurigram’s Nageswari upazila, both Mokhlesur and Nur had joined the construction work in April. They were planning to go home together ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, said they were looking into whether the building owners had taken adequate safety measures.
A police team visited the construction site, but did not find any owner of the building there, the OC added.
Police sent the bodies to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsies.
