Safety and Rights Society conducted training on occupational safety, health and labor rights of sanitation workers. |
Safety and Rights Society has been working to create safe workplaces. In Bangladesh, sanitation workers are associated with hazardous work. Sanitation workers are mainly from the Dalit community. Most of the workers are young but they have no knowledge about labor rights. They often suffer from physical illness while working in unsanitary environment. Sanitation workers are not provided with adequate personal protective equipment at their workplaces. They suffer regular accidents due to non-use of safety equipment. Sanitation workers are exposed to various biochemical contaminants while cleaning drains, septic tanks. Toxic chemicals enter their bodies and pose serious health risks. Women workers are harassed at workplace. As most of the cleaning work is done at night or early in the morning, they are often victims of various robberies. They get seriously injured and sometimes die after being hit by various vehicles while cleaning the roads. They do not know what the occupational health risks of their work are and what rights they have to keep the workplace safe. It is essential to make these sanitation workers aware of their health safety and rights to create a safe work environment. Safety and Rights Society conducted training on occupational safety, health and labour rights of sanitation workers organized by Nagorik Uddog in Lalmonirhat porosova and Rangpur City Corporation.
